Well Mastercard has now followed in the footsteps of Apple and Nike and dropped the Mastercard name from their logo! *mic-drop*
“Reinvention in the digital age calls for modern simplicity,” said Raja Rajamannar, chief marketing and communication officer at Mastercard. “And with more than 80 percent of people spontaneously recognising the Mastercard Symbol without the word ‘mastercard,’ we felt ready to take this next step in our brand evolution. We are proud of our rich brand heritage and are excited to see the iconic circles standing on their own.”
By changing its logo, Mastercard is attempting to align itself with other iconic brands that are so well-known they don’t need to be identified by words. Mastercard has had the great fortune of being represented by two interlocking circles, one red, one yellow, since its founding in 1977.
According to Michael Beirut, a partner at the design firm Pentagram which designed the new logo, the new Mastercard logo is easier to read on phones or digital watches. It’s also indicative of a world where people aren’t just using their phones or watches to check their credit card balances, but to pay for goods and services too.
But the announcement of this change comes with its skeptics. “I do not think it is yet iconic enough to successfully execute this new identity, but over time, they will learn if it was a mistake, which I think it is.” Pace University marketing professor Larry Chiagouris said.
